Making public benefits programs accessible to those in need

At LAD, we fight to obtain a range of public benefits for those who have fallen on hard times, as well as individuals who cannot support themselves appropriately due to developmental, mental or physical disabilities. From income support to food assistance, medical insurance, disability benefits, and other related resources, we are humbled to help our area’s most vulnerable residents obtain rightful public aid and assistance.

Specifically speaking, we can help individuals gain access to and assistance from the following programs:

  • Supplementary Security Income (SSI)
  • Social Security Disability (SSDI)
  • Family Independence Program (FIA)
  • Food Assistance Payments (Food Stamps)
  • Medicare or Medicaid
  • Additional related programs

Having criminal convictions on your record reduces your employment and housing options. Under Michigan law, many are eligible to have their criminal convictions set aside and made “nonpublic”. LAD provides free legal review of your ICHAT (public internet criminal history through the Michigan State Police) to advise you on your eligibility to have your criminal conviction(s) set aside, and free legal representation through the record expungement process. For qualified applicants, some of the costs associated with the expungement process may be covered through grants.
